FROM ST MAIRS TO CYNON LINC – THE HISTORY
For more than 150 years, St Mairs was a fixture of daily life in Aberdare. The church first opened its doors in November 1864, built to serve the Welsh speaking Anglican congregation and remained at the heart of the town for almost a century; a building with deep roots in the community.
Following its demolition in 1963, the site was redeveloped as the St Mair’s Centre becoming a much-loved day centre for older people and continuing its long tradition of community support. For many, St Mair’s remains rich with memories – from games of snooker in the back room to grand Christmas dinners enjoyed together year after year in the main hall.
The journey to transform St Mair’s Day Centre into today’s Cynon Linc began in 2015, when our charity Age Connects Morgannwg worked with the local authority to explore development options. started working with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council and the Big Lottery Fund to explore redevelopment options. This work grew into a wider partnership involving Cwm Taf University Health Board, third sector organisations and the local community.

In August 2018, ACM took over the running of St Mair’s in preparation for a major refurbishment.
The aim was to create a bright, modern, and welcoming space now known as Cynon Linc. that the local community could be proud of and that would attract visitors and organisations from across the Cynon Valley and further afield.
Cynon Linc is home to several organisations, including Age Connects Morgannwg’s head office, located on the first floor. We also operate an over-50s information point, providing advice and support to help older people live healthier, more independent lives. At the heart of the building is the Hyb Kitchen and Coffee Shop, offering quality tea and coffee, daily specials, delicious desserts and expertly prepared meals, with a discount available for those aged over 60.
Cynon Linc is a Community Resilient hub that welcomes all walks of life; making it a ‘Place for Everyone’. Come join us for a cuppa, an exercise class or for a friendly chat to support the charity in making the hub a sustainable for generations to come.
